Muslims and Jews build community relations by eating together

14 January 2024

On Sunday 14 January we held our annual kosher meal at "Celia's Kitchen" restaurant in Prestwich.

Since the Forum was founded nearly 19 years ago, we have organised many meals in kosher restaurants and a few in Asian restaurants. There has always been a good turnout for such events and this was no exception as approximately 30 people attended.

The special guest was the Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester, Kate Green. The Deputy Mayor stated in her short speech that it was more important than ever for interfaith events like these to be held given the current uncertain and difficult times.

Our Jewish Co-Chair Cllr Heather Fletcher introduced Ms Green while our Muslim Co-Chair Mohammed Amin welcomed the guests at the start of the event.

There were some attenders present who had only been to one or two events before, but also many regular attendees were present. It was particularly pleasing to see one regular attender, 86-year-old Holocaust survivor Tomi Komoly, amongst the guests.

There was a warm and friendly atmosphere throughout as the diners engaged in conversation and enjoyed their delicious meals provided by the restaurant’s owner Mark Clyne.

Executive member, Cllr Rabnawaz Akbar who is Muslim said:

"Members of the Muslim and Jewish communities were joined by people of other faiths and cultures to enjoy excellent food and good company. The evening highlighted the value of the Muslim Jewish Forum which brings our diverse communities together especially at a time when world events continue to present enormous challenges."

Fiona Maynard who is Jewish and has attended many Forum events over the years said:

"Such a special event bringing together Muslims and Jews for an evening of food, social and exchange of ideas. Kate Green, the Deputy Mayor, introduced the enjoyable occasion which had been organised so well by the Co-Chairs Cllr Heather Fletcher and Mohammed Amin."
